Hello Summer & Christmas time in Brisbane, Australia!

Today is 34.6C/94.2ºF and humid.

I am now 6 ½ months pregnant, so keeping cool is a bit of a priority at the moment! We only have one room in our house with air-conditioning which we can venture to if we need it. Otherwise, I am working in my little studio under the stairs and Miss 4 is cooling off in her kiddy pool. "Icy drinks please Butler!"

I wouldn't have it any other way though. Oh, actually, I wouldn't say no to full air-conditioning throughout. And a Butler.

I just finished packing up my last commissioned painting with an Xmas deadline. It's off to Florida, USA. Hope it travels quickly and safely!

A big 30" x 40" painting wrapped and ready for it's trip overseas!

I'll post pics of the finished painting once I get the ok from the client. It's a Christmas present! :)

I think I've also managed to finish my Xmas shopping. I did some online (a time saver!) and braved the local Westfield a couple of times to finish it off. I also got my 2013 diary yesterday!! I know, in an age where you can have an iPad, laptop, phone, etc, you don't need a paper diary, but I just can't be without one. I get such a thrill out of my new diary each year! What a stationery nerd.

I had the 2012 Frankie Diary this year:

2012 Frankie Diary - $26.95 from frankiepress.com.au

which I loved, but the 2013 was very similar, and I wanted a change...

Kikki K had some contenders...but nothing 'grabbed' me. Except for their planner stickers - which I just had to have!

Life's Little Stickers
"Life's Little Stickers" $3.95 from Kikki K

In the end I went with a fluro coral pink diary from Typo. When else am I going to own a fluro diary? I'm only 28 and it's 2013! The picture really doesn't do it justice.

"Fluro Pink 2013 Buffalo Diary" from Typo

I can't wait to get stuck in to it!

The markets on the weekend have been fun, I've met loads of talented people. My last one is this Friday - Chandler Xmas Twilight Market, from 2pm-9pm, at the Sleeman Sports Centre, Chandler, QLD.

Should be a great night. I hope to see you there!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

No wonder they call it the 'silly season' - the shops are crazy, the postal system goes...um...postal, there are Christmas parties and kids parties at every chance, everywhere you go there are Mariah Carey and Michael Buble's Xmas albums playing in the background, and everyone gets just a little bit s i l l y!

Ah...but I love Sundays.

For some strange reason this is one Sunday in the past couple of months that I don't have a stall at a market, so what did we do this morning? We went shopping at the local farmer's market! Yes, we're nuts. But we did get a truck load of fruit and veg and some fresh flowers. It's a different game when you're the shopper!

Snow white roses - trying not to wilt in this heat!

This week we also got around to putting up the Christmas tree. We finally got a black one with a pink and silver theme. I love it!

This week I'll be getting ready for 2 markets that are coming up next weekend:

Saturday 15th December – Christmas in the Carpark
(It's FREE! - with modern Christmas carols, Santa, twilight markets, face painting, food and drinks...)
Wynnum RSL
174 Tingal Rd, Wynnum
5pm – 9pm

Sunday 16th December – Redlands Handmade Expo
Redlands PCYC (aka Capalaba PCYC)
Corner of Mt Cotton & Degen Rds, Capalaba
9am – 2pm

As for painting, I've been whipping up a storm with commissioned paintings with Christmas deadlines. I've got one to send off to the USA this week, and I'm going to make sure it gets there before Xmas if I have to fly it there myself!

On that note - I should go and finish it off. I hope you all had a nice weekend! :)

Market Days

Wow what a weekend! It's now Tuesday morning and I've only just found a moment to update the blog. On Saturday, (after taking Miss 4 to a birthday party in the morning! Super Mum brownie points there!!), I had a stall at the Ruffled Bazaar Christmas Spectacular, which was great! :) It was a twilight market, so it went from the afternoon to the evening, and I met loads of lovely people - both talented stallholders and customers and fans that have been following me for years but I have only just met in person! I love that!!

A quick snap of my stall before the sun went down! :)

Then on Sunday, for the first time, I had a stall at the Young Designers Market at Southbank. It was a HOT day, and other stall holders said it wasn't as busy as it normally would be, but I met a lot of nice people, and a lot of tourists passing through and taking my art with them!

I'm now 24 weeks pregnant - so Hubby was a godsend in helping me set up and get through the day! :) Love him to bits.

I ran out of some prints while at the markets, so I spent yesterday running around getting some supplies and doing the usual boring errands like food shopping, and today I'm back in my little studio under the stairs and finishing off some commissioned paintings with Xmas deadlines! :)

Oh, and Miss 4 is home too.

AND...it's supposed to reach 39°C (102°F) today!

Stay cool!!

Big News and Big Weekend Ahead!

BIG NEWS! We are expecting another little addition to our family in March 2013! I've been meaning to share this on my blog for a while now, but have been so busy updating everything else. We don't know if it's a boy or girl - we're just going to wait and see! Hubby, Miss 4 and I are over the moon. :)

Lately I've been busy busy in the lead up to Christmas. Orders are rolling in, and deadlines for Xmas commissioned paintings are closing in (art makes awesome presents!). Adding to this it is market season, and I'm attending markets nearly every weekend from now until Dec 25th!

This weekend there are two:

The Ruffled Bazaar Christmas Spectacular on Saturday 3-8pm, Mt Gravatt Showgrounds, QLD.

 and Sunday...

The Young Designers Market, 10am-4pm, Little Stanley St, SOUTHBANK, QLD.

I'm really excited to be part of both of these events! If you're in the area and need to finish a little bit of Xmas shopping - drop by and say hello! :)

"A Christmas Angel"

Due to a late afternoon nap, which went for way longer than it should've, I am wide awake at 12:10am and so I thought I may as well blog about my latest painting.

I decided I need to do more Christmas themed paintings, because I love the lead up to Christmas and I also wanted more designs for cards. This latest creation is called "A Christmas Angel" and it has a festive angel with big green eyes, teal coloured hair (with a sprig of holly) and beautiful blue feathered wings. There are lots of little Christmas details in this one, including a candy cane, little swallow bird, baubles and stars.

I've had a few customers asking about Christmas cards, so I've made a few from this painting - both note card size and greeting cards size. They are currently available to buy on Etsy or through my Facebook page.

Set of 4 notecards $9.99

Greeting Card (with diamontes!) $3.50 ea

Miss 4 will be awake at her usual time in the morning so I should probably go and get some sleep.

Have a nice weekend! :)

 P.S. I didn't win the $100m lotto. I did however get 4 numbers out of 7, winning $21.40!

Is Today Your Lucky Day?

Today in Australia we have our biggest horse race of the year - The Melbourne Cup. They call it "the race that stops a nation" because around 3pm (Melb time) people all over the country stop work, drop what they are doing, and wait in excited anticipation while the horses run their final lap around Flemington Racecourse. I haven't put a bet on this year. I normally do, but always seem to fail miserably, so I decided to put my money on a lotto ticket instead. Tonight there will be a $100 million superdraw!

My lucky "Four Leaf Clover Fairy"

Along with these exciting events - 3 of my Facebook fans have also been lucky today! I'm excited to have reached 900 fans (actually 921 at the moment!) - and I am giving away art prints to 3 random fans. The winners this time are...Lisa Jayne Blackmore, Kathryn Woods, and John Paul Luna! If you are one of these winners could you please email me at artbyjaz@yahoo.com.au, along with which 8x10" art print you would like, and where you would like me to send it to. Congratulations!

I've continued to be busy working on commissioned paintings lately. In the lead up to Christmas I tend to get quite a lot of them! Which is great of course. :) I recently finished a big triptych piece for a client inspired by his lovely little girl and 2 of her favourite doggy pets!

Commissioned triptych painting - each panel measuring 50cm x 60cm (20" x 24")

Today I'm starting a new commissioned painting - it's quite big at 30"x40" - so I better get going on it! Hopefully I'll be able to share pics of it once it's finished. I'm also open to your ideas for my big 1,000 Facebook fan giveaway! An original painting? A set of prints?...What do you think?

Halloween + New Painting!

Happy Halloween

Ok, Halloween was actually yesterday here in Australia - but it's still Halloween for some of my Northern Hemisphere friends. We took Miss 4 trick or treating last night with some friends, but we made the rookie mistake of going after dinner, and everyone was out of lollies! Every year Halloween seems to be getting bigger and bigger here in Oz, and this year the trick or treaters were out in full force - no one expected the numbers they got! So my tips for next year peeps:

1) Stock up. It won't matter if there's some left over :)

2) Trick or Treat early. That is, somewhere between 5:30 - 7pm. Seriously though - some people aren't even home from work at that time? Maybe we should just make it a public holiday.

3) Leave something outside (ie. a balloon, or a jack-o-lantern) to let trick or treaters know they are welcome. Otherwise, if you would prefer not to be disturbed, leave your lights off.

 It's lots of fun!

Today I've been working on a painting that I started back in August for the Monthly Painter's Challenge topic "Insect". (My Husband accidentally read the topic as "Incest"...which was a bit of a worry, but that's a whole other story!). Half way through painting it, I got an influx of commissioned paintings and didn't get to finish it until now. So this is what I would've submitted back in August. She is called "Fairy of the Insects"

Fairy of the Insects Side

If the original is sold or out of your budget, there are also 8x10" prints available. :)

I'm very excited to see that I've now reached over 900 Facebook fans! I will be drawing out 3 random fan names to send free prints to. Stay tuned...

QT Gold Coast + from 3 to 4!

So I've been busy, busy, busy with commissioned paintings lately. I'm hoping once they're finished the clients will let me show you all of my hard work :)

I did, however, get to have the weekend off last weekend to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary at the Gold Coast! We stayed at the QT Hotel and it was fabulous! Seriously one of the coolest hotels I've stayed at. I would describe it as 50s/60s cool - with just the right amount of kitsch.

http://www.qtgoldcoast.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/qt-gold-coast-lobby-19.jpg
We were welcomed by a guy on a skateboard, who offered to take our bags up to our room.

Lolly bars in the foyer cafe.

We stayed in the King Ocean View room with mod 50s style decor, that came with a price list and you could actually buy if you want to. Cockatoo lamp anyone?

We spent hours lounging by the pool on Sunday afternoon and even had a dip and a drink at the swim up bar. Hello Spring!

http://www.qtgoldcoast.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/qt-gold-coast-bazaar-23.jpg
We had dinner and breakfast at the amazing Bazaar restaurant on Level 1 of the QT. I can't rave enough about the service and the food!

Bazaar offers a buffet style dinner and breakfast with a 'market place' feel. You can help yourself to anything you like, and you're encouraged to ask the chefs to cook anything to your liking - whether it's a wood fired pizza, a medium rare steak, or a breakfast omelette with the lot. The dessert bar is also something out of this world. Lots of little petite desserts, along with a cold-rock style ice-cream and lolly bar!

Dinner is $69 pp, Breakfast is $32. Ours was included with our hotel package. :)

It's amazing what a refreshing (child free!) weekend away can do! Even though it was only a couple of days, I missed having little Miss 3 following us around.

And today - little Miss 3 is going to be little Miss 4! It's her birthday!!!

How quickly time flies when you're having fun. Happy Birthday to our gorgeous girl. We love you so very very much!

Hello October!

October is here! and that means GO GO GO!

Christmas orders start coming in, Miss 3 will be turning into Miss 4, about a hundred commissioned paintings to complete (ok, maybe not 100, but more than I can count right now!), markets to prepare for, bigger wholesale orders, and Halloween is coming up!

"Halloween Dream"

It is one of my favourite months though. The weather is warming up and there's so many fun things going on...and today is our 2nd Wedding Anniversary!

We've been together for 8 years, and married 2. :)

Ok time to get back to finishing off a beautiful commissioned painting. If the client agrees, I will post pics of it shortly.

In the meantime, there is still room to fit in a couple more commissioned paintings if you have something you want in time for Christmas, just be sure to get your order in asap by emailing me your ideas at artbyjaz@yahoo.com.au.

28 going on 15.

3 days ago I turned 28 - and I've had the best birthday week! On Tuesday night Hubby surprised me with dinner and Hanson tickets! (Not so secretly my all time favourite band...)

It may as well have been 1999 - because standing there I was 15 again. They've certainly come a long way from the long-blonde-haired MMMBOP kids, but they haven't lost their touch. Awesome concert.

On Friday night...we went to see a cult movie double of "Blues Brothers" and "Cry-Baby" (only my favourite movie of all time!) - along with live performances of the musical scenes!

The Blues Brothers Poster                  Cry-Baby Poster

The weekend was then spent with my shopping with my little family, and a friend of mine who came to visit from the Sunshine Coast. We also managed a Max Brenner date. I had the Euphoria Banana Split Waffle Sundae. Eurphoric!

And on the art front...

An exciting development this week is that I am now stocking art prints, postcards and notecards at Handmade Highstreet, in Annerley, QLD!

I've been busy with commissioned paintings lately so you probably haven't seen many new original paintings in the last couple of weeks (they are coming...I promise!).

Back to work I go. Happy Friday!

Strawberry Season

In between commissioned paintings, packing and wrapping orders to post, and making food...Miss 3 and I managed to plant 2 strawberry plants this morning!

Watering...

I even managed to get a photo for the Yellow Pages Capture the Cover competition - after all - we couldn't have a Redlands themed phone book without strawberries could we?

Now it's back to painting, oh, and eating a jacket potato for lunch.

Lots of little projects!

It's been a crazy couple of days with lots of art orders, a sick husband (man flu!), Miss 3 at home, Drs appointments, lugging massive rolls of cardboard & bubble wrap (packing supplies) around, trips to the post office...you name it. Tomorrow I'll be happy to bunker down and finish off that big (72cm x 101cm) monochrome commissioned painting. Hopefully once it's complete and the client is 100% happy, I will be able to share some pictures. It's 'Alice in Wonderland' inspired, and it's coming along really nicely. It's strange because I usually work with lots of bright colours, and this one is all black, grey and white! It's fun to do something different though.

As well as that I've been busy getting wholesale orders organised to send out to a few shops in the next few days. Art prints, postcard packs and notecards...
Makin' notecards!

I'll let you know the details of the stores once I've finalised each lot.

So...there's lots of little things going on at the moment. It's now right in the thick of Winter here in Brisbane, Australia (which let's face it, doesn't exactly get any snow), but it's cold enough to want to wear my dressing gown all day long (which I would except the sleeves are too bulky and always end up in my paint water!). The Winter days are stunning though - blue skies, a chill in the air and the warm sun beaming down. I might even get the chance to snap a few photos this weekend for the Yellow Pages "Capture the Cover" comp! I don't know how I'm going to compete with entries like this one from Perth, but I'll give it a go!

#CaptureTheCover entry by Steve Fraser

Brisbane's Bayside does have some stunning areas to capture. Let's just hope this nice weather continues through the weekend! :)
