Christmas Hustle and Bustle

December is a crazy, busy, silly month...and this year is no exception. I decided not to do any markets this year, as Baby A is still so little, and the month really is busy enough. Thank goodness I made that decision because I really don't know where I would've fit them in. Print orders have been coming in steadily, and despite saying that I wasn't taking on any new commissioned paintings, I still had a few to finish with Christmas deadlines. Not to mention Christmas parties, preschool graduation, kids parties, present shopping, ipad repairs, family visits and endless trips to the post office. It just hasn't stopped. It's all mostly fun, but busy!

Then there's Christmas cards. There's a lack of paper cards arriving in my letterbox in recent years (thanks internet!), but I do think there's something nice about receiving a special card via snail mail sometimes. I also love when Miss 5 recieves little Christmas cards from her preschool friends - each with their own unique spin on them (whether it's a candy cane or carefully handwritten note with newly learnt handwriting - so cute!). So this year I made 33 of these little cards for her friends, thanks to the idea from MakerLand (via Giggleberry Creations).
Merry Christmas Lollipop Cards!

I really have to stop and check myself sometimes. What am I doing all this for? Oh that's right, to have fun. So that Christmas is enjoyable. So that my family is happy and I'm happy and everyone's having a good time. So stop...breathe...and don't freak out if the ribbon doesn't match the gift wrap.

Here's one of the paintings I finished for a lady this week. She has previously purchased two of my other paintings and wanted a third to add to the set. This is simply "Pretty Pink Flower Fairy".

Obviously the original painting has already sold, but if you like her, there are 8x10" prints available here.

As I write, it's now 2 minutes to midnight, and I could really use some sleep before another busy weekend/week ahead. If you are reading this, I hope in this week leading up to Christmas you have lots of little moments where you can stop, enjoy it, and take it all in. And I hope that I can take some of my own advice!

The Watch Flower

Last night I listed a little mini painting (4"x4") up for auction here. It's an eye study I painted over a few nights last week and I decided to add a few petals around it and create my first "Watch Flower". It reminds me of something Alice might find in Wonderland.

I've signed and dated it on the back.

At 4"x4" it is tiny so it would look cute sitting on a desk, or in a little nook somewhere.

I've had a big day today - ending with Miss 5's preschool graduation. Yes, complete with cap and gown and all! So incredibly cute. I'm going to bed one tired but very proud Mumma.

Growing and growing!

Lots of things are growing here. My babies are growing at a rapid rate, baby A is nearly 8 months old, and Miss 5 will soon be graduating preschool. Waaaaah!

Art orders are growing in the lead up to Christmas. The majority of my work is done at night when the kids are in bed, but I also work on bits and pieces through the day if I can. I have a couple of commissioned paintings with Christmas deadlines on them too. eek!

Packaging art prints at my desk.

(You can find a list of my online stores HERE.)

My little garden is also growing!

I starting to find a few tomatoes popping up on the vine. I'm so happy - these are the first fruits I've grown from the seeds of scraps.

This is a photo update on my passionfruit plant that I spoke about in an earlier post. It's also grown from seeds from scraps of a passionfruit I had in my fridge. There are two new little shoots also popping up in the pot - but I think they're weeds.

I grabbed some garlic cloves that were on the clearance table at the fruit shop ($1 for heaps of single cloves!), and I've been planting them as they sprout. The second photo is of the shoots that popped up only a couple of days after planting them.

While I'm far from being a farmer yet - I'm having fun watching how things grow and I get a kick out of it when I actually get something right. Like, when I saw an actual tomato on the plant I grew from smooshing a few old tomato seeds into the ground. It's kind of magic.

It's nearly time to put the Christmas decorations up! I think I'll put the tree up in the next week or so. Is your tree up yet? Do you believe it's bad luck to put the tree up before December 1st? Let me know in the comments below. Also - let me know what you're growing in your backyard/kitchen bench/pots...

Halloween 2013

For Halloween this year Miss 5 dressed as "Princess Bubblegum" from Adventure Time!

While Baby A (7 months) dressed as the cutest jack-o-lantern I've ever seen.

We went trick-or-treating again which was a big success, and we all ate too many lollies (except Baby A of course!), and Miss 5 was dancing around all silly all night, but it was all worth it.

Baby A Trick or Treating

I forgot how cold it still gets in October when the sun goes down though, and we ended up freezing by the end of it. Needless to say, Baby A has a sniffly nose today and I feel like a terrible Mother! Note for next year: warmer costumes.

Trick or Treating 2013

Congratulations to Julie O'Keefe who won my original "Pumpkinlings" painting!

I had fun doing a competition, so keep an eye out on my Facebook page for more giveaways in the future.

Today is Friday! Woo hoo! I'm looking foward to a relaxing weekend. We are supposed to be going away to the Coast, but I'm hoping bub isn't too sick. I guess we'll see how he goes today. I've got a mountain of housework to do, but beside from that, today I will be working on a commissioned painting as well as a new painting in my Zodiac series. Which sign do you think it is??

Parties and a Tiny Painting.

It's Sunday night and another busy weekend has flown by! How is it Sunday night again already??

After dinner last night we decided to check out the Manly Harbour Village Halloween Street Party. I've always wanted to go, and Miss 5 wanted to wear her Halloween costume (Princess Bubblegum this year!). So we battled the enormous crowd, stayed around an hour to have a look at the market stalls and Miss 5 went on the mini ferris wheel. To be honest the whole thing was a bit overwhelming in general. SO many people! I think the only reason I would go back next year would be if I had an art stall there. That would be pretty cool.

Speaking of Halloween art! My competition to win my original "Pumpkinlings" painting ends tonight at midnight! Have you entered yet?

Today we went to a 5th birthday party at The Plaster Fun House! I haven't been there since I was a kid, and it was exactly how I remember it. Miss 5 painted a turtle and finished it off with glitter and a bow. So cute. When we got home I finished off a little 3"x3" painting called "Tiny Witch" and put her up for auction HERE.
Work in progress...

It's now 10:49pm, and I'm so tired, so I'll be heading off to bed...I look forward to picking a competition winner in the morning!

WIN an original painting!

It's no secret I love Halloween, so in between working on some commissioned paintings I've been sketching and painting away on this 8x8" jack-o-lantern piece. These are baby "pumpkinlings" - little baby jack-o-lanterns with bat wings! You can enter to win this original painting by entering the competition below! It's very easy! :)

Win this "Pumpkinlings" Original Painting!

I loved painting these little guys and I'm hoping to feature them in other paintings in the future.

I bought Baby A his very first Halloween outfit today, which I'll keep a secret until I can show you. It's so cute! I'm still working on Miss 5's. She wants to be Marceline the Vampire Queen

Today was Miss 5's birthday party with some of her preschool friends. Needless to say I'm pretty tired and looking forward to hitting the pillow tonight. But for now - GO ENTER the competition to win an original painting! :)

My big 5 year old.

My little baby girl is now 5! Can you believe it? Her actual birthday was on Wednesday, but she's been celebrating all week with parties at Grandma's and Lollipops Playland

It seems like it was only yesterday that I was holding her as a newborn in my arms.

She lights up our life in such a way that we can barely recall what it was like before she was in it.

Happy Birthday Sweet Sweet Girl.

A short break!

We're back from our long weekend away in Northern NSW. The weather was perfect! We caught up with Hubby's side of the family, went to the Ballina Country Music Festival (and yes, I actually enjoyed it even though it's my least favourite type of music!), checked out the Ballina Art Gallery, went out for dinner, went to the beach, and caught up with some friends. It was as relaxing as it can be when you're holidaying with kids (or as Mia Freedman put it - "taking-the-baby-to-another-location"). They loved it though!

Art wise - I'm currently working on some commissioned pieces. My latest one is one that I did for a gorgeous 1 year old girl - with all of her favourite colours and things in it:

10"x12" Original Fairy Painting

I also should finish off this mini painting I've been working on. I wonder if I'll get it finished before Halloween!??

Right now I have 3 more commissioned paintings in the works, and that's probably all I will take up until Christmas. I told myself that I wouldn't be doing Christmas markets this year, but I sort of have the bug for it. I guess we'll see what happens.

Last year at Southbank's Young Designers Market

October is already zooming by. I haven't even worked out what the kids are going to do or wear for Halloween. I have Miss (nearly) 5's birthday before that, and I haven't even started planning anything yet for that! I promised to keep it small and very simple this year.

For now though, I have to face the worst part about going on holiday -  I've got a ton of unpacking and washing to do! Ugh. Hopefully I'll get some decent painting time in tonight when the Miss-5-at-home-and-teething-baby chaos settles down. :)

Giant Moth Saga

I must tell you about a moth that has it in for me. Yes, you read that right - a moth.

I am not one to be afraid of moths. I've never understood why some people have weird moth phobias. They're basically the butterfly's less exciting cousin aren't they? I would even go so far as to say I find them beautiful and interesting. I have even included them in my paintings. But the moth that I'm about to tell you about was not pretty or beautiful, it was a HUGE, evil, man eating, amazonian size insect.

A few months ago, I left the windows in my car down while I was at my Mum's place. When I got back in (at night mind you), a GIANT moth flew at me. In the dark I thought it was a bat - that's how big it was! Anyway, I didn't see it leave the car, but I had my brother in law ransack search the entire car to which he assured me it was gone. After that, I drove for 40kms on a Winter's night with all 4 windows down to my destination in the hope that if it was still in the car, it would be sucked out at full speed.

This was the actual size of the moth that flew at me! (Photo © Mangahana)

Flash forward a few months to tonight - I am putting Baby A (6 months old) and Miss 4 in the car, when the giant moth returned, flying out of the darkness of the console and right at my head. Both Miss 4 and I screamed and jumped around, as I grabbed the baby out of his carseat and ran for cover. After a phone call to Hubby (to explain why we would be late picking him up), I turned the light off in the car and on in the garage and eventually coaxed him out that way and watched as he flew away into the night sky.

I'm not sure why this moth shook me up so much. I think it was the sheer size of it and the fact that it only seems to show up at night, when I'm least expecting it, and it flutters about madly and unpredictably at my head, and in my car of all places. What if I was driving!? I hate to think. Let's just hope the moth saga is over. It was rather strange, and has inspired some painting ideas that's for sure.

Now I'm off to research whether giant moths are some sort of bizarre omen...

Original Paintings Available & Growing Fruit!

Now that the 'Once Upon a Time' exhibition is over, I have my paintings here in my home studio and ready for sale! I have listed them in my eBay and Etsy stores, but if you're wanting a bit of a discount, you can also purchase any of my paintings through my Facebook page.  All of my original paintings are in a photo album labelled "Available Original Paintings" - and you can buy them by simply writing 'sold' in the comments field, along with your email address so I can contact you. I typically give my Facebook fans a discount of 10% or more due to the fact that I don't have to pay listing fees as I do in my other stores.

"Cinderella - Something Magical Awaits" Painting by Jaz Higgins
"Cinderella - Something Magical Awaits"
This week (apart from the usual chaos that also comes with being a Mummy to a 4 year old and a 5 month old) I've been working away on a couple of commissioned paintings, that I will be able to share with you once they're finished.

I've been managing to get some painting hours in here and there when the babies are asleep...:)

My lovely friend Tracey asked me how my passionfruit seeds are going and I'm happy to say that I think I might have a passionfruit vine sprouting!?

I dried out the seeds from a store bought passionfruit.

I put them on some soil in a covered container, opening it for around an hour a day just to make sure they didn't go mouldy. Eventually a couple of them sprouted and I planted them in little pots!

Look! I think this is a passionfruit vine. (At least I hope it is, and not just something that was in the soil that I put in the container in the first place. lol)

Apart from passionfruit, I've also been trying to grow some other things - like tomatoes! I don't even eat tomatoes myself, but Hubby does and I'm always buying them for salads and recipes, and apparently they're easy to grow. Taking my Mum's advice - I threw some over ripe tomatoes from her plant into the dirt in my backyard and roughly smooshed them in there...and a few weeks later...I think there are lots of little tomato sprouts shooting up!

Tomato sprouts!

While I'm not exactly Don Burke, I think it's fun to watch these plants spring to life from practically nowhere. Plus - eating my own organic food is pretty awesome, and it also gives the kids a great learning experience. I look forward to having a bigger garden space some day, but at the moment my little garden and some herb and flower pots are my limit.

It's Friday night, our babies are asleep, and Hubby and I are heading that way ourselves! So it's goodnight for now. Have a fun weekend! x

3 New Mini Paintings

So THIS little baby boy is now 5 months old! How did that happen?!

Photo: How are you 5 months old already? 󾬓

We're all a bit under the weather at the moment. It must be the change of season or something. We're all coughing and sniffly with sore throats. Bleh.

Over the last week or so I've been working on these mini paintings at night - and they are now available in my eBay store (if they haven't been snapped up already).

You can find them here:

I'm looking forward to Spring - my favourite season!

But for now, off I go on medicine duty...

"Once Upon a Time" Wrap Up

The "Once Upon a Time" group exhibition was a great success. Loads of amazing artwork and a very busy opening night! It was my first night away from Baby A since he was born (he's now 5 months), so Hubby and I took the opportunity to have a quiet dinner at Huongs afterwards. Party animals!

Opening night was a full house! Photo by

Now that the exhibition has come to an end I can finally share with you all the three paintings I have been working on for the past few months!

First up is "Snow White in the Enchanted Forest"

"Snow White in the Enchanted Forest" Original Painting - 80cm (W) x 100cm (L) x 3.5cm (D) - BIG!
This one is of the beautiful Snow White, while she sits in the Enchated Forest. She is surrounded by lots of little woodland creatures - deer, bunny rabbits, an owl, a raccoon, a little squirrel, and butterflies. A truely magical painting!

The original is $700, (or $660 for Facebook fans) - you can purchase it by commenting on THIS POST.

Next is a painting which was inspired by the original Hans Christian Andersen version of "The Little Mermaid" (written in 1837).

"The Little Mermaid's Demise" Original Painting - 40cm (W) x 120cm (L) x 3.5cm (D) - BIG!

This one was inspired by the original version of "The Little Mermaid" fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. It explores the themes of life, death and love through the characters of The Little Mermaid and the Evil Sea Witch. I've also included a little blue and yellow fish in this one too! :)
The original is: $600 (or $570 for Facebook fans
you can purchase it by commenting on THIS POST.
A4 size Art Prints: $12.99
A3 size Art Prints: $23.99

And lastly I did a Cinderellla piece! "Cinderella - Something Magical Awaits"

"Cinderella - Something Magical Awaits" Original Painting - 30cm (W) x 40cm (L) x 1.5cm (D).

She has been slaving away in the castle, dusting the cinders from the fireplace, and talking to her mice friends. Just when she thought all hope was lost, she begins to sense that something magical is awaiting her...

The original is: $190 (or $170 for Facebook fans
you can purchase it by commenting on THIS POST.

A3 size Art Prints: $23.99

Since the birth of Baby A in March, I have taken a step back from my art business to focus on him, and the only art I've really been dedicated to has been finishing these three main paintings for the exhibition. It took more than a few late nights, but it was worth it in the end.

While the exhibition has been on this week it's been a relief not to have a deadline to work to and I've taken any late night opportunities to just enjoy working away at a couple of little paintings which I will put up in my eBay store in the coming week. There's also a couple of commissioned paintings in the works. :)

No more formal exhibitions for the year though. Phew!
